Nigerian Court Abolishes Law Dismissing Unmarried Pregnant Policewomen

The Nigerian Court of Appeal has declared Police Regulations 126 and 127 unconstitutional, effectively expunging laws that permitted the dismissal of unmarried pregnant policewomen.

Previously, these regulations mandated that female officers could not marry within their first three years of service and faced dismissal if they became pregnant while unmarried. These provisions were deemed discriminatory, as they applied exclusively to women and not their male counterparts.

The court's decision aligns with the Nigerian Constitution's stance against discrimination based on sex, ensuring that female officers are no longer subjected to punitive measures for pregnancy outside of marriage. This ruling signifies a progressive shift towards gender equality within the Nigeria Police Force.
