On April 29, 2025, Nigerian street-hop artist Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was sentenced to three months in prison by a Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State, for assault-related offenses. However, he avoided jail time by paying a ₦30,000 fine.
The charges stemmed from a November 18, 2022, incident in the Okeosa, Ilogbo area, where Portable and others allegedly assaulted police inspector Osimosu Emmanuel Oluwafemi and resisted arrest. The court found him guilty on two counts: conspiracy to commit assault and unlawful assault. He was sentenced to one month in prison with a ₦10,000 fine for the first count and two months with a ₦20,000 fine for the second. A third charge of theft was dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
Portable had previously been granted bail but failed to attend court sessions, leading to his remand. He later opted to pay the fine, thereby avoiding incarceration.
This case has sparked public debate about the effectiveness of fines as deterrents for assault convictions.
