In October 2024, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment initiated an investigation into allegations of a N3 billion fraud within the National Assembly chapter of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN). This action followed a petition by PASAN member Yusuf Abiola, who accused the union's leadership of misappropriating funds and called for audited financial statements from 2019 to date. In response, PASAN's National Assembly chapter chairman, Sunday Sabiyyi, denied the allegations, labeling them as baseless and defamatory. The Ministry, through the Registrar of Trade Unions, invited both parties to a meeting to address the issue.
Additionally, in December 2024, contractors who were awarded contracts worth N3.2 billion by the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), and other relevant bodies. They alleged a breach of contract and misappropriation of funds by the commission's leadership. The contractors claimed that after initiating the supply of assistive devices for persons with disabilities, the newly appointed Executive Secretary of NCPWD terminated the contracts without due process.
These developments highlight ongoing concerns about financial mismanagement within various government ministries and agencies, prompting calls for thorough investigations by anti-corruption bodies like the EFCC and ICPC.
