Putin Orders 3-Day Ceasefire for May 8–10; Ukraine Demands Immediate 30-Day Truce

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced a unilateral three-day ceasefire in Ukraine, scheduled from May 8 to May 10, 2025, to coincide with the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory in World War II. The Kremlin describes this move as a humanitarian gesture, urging Ukraine to reciprocate. However, Ukrainian officials have criticized the delay and questioned the sincerity of the truce, calling for an immediate and lasting ceasefire.

The United States, under President Donald Trump, has also expressed skepticism about the temporary ceasefire. President Trump emphasized the need for a permanent resolution to the conflict and criticized recent Russian military actions, including missile strikes in Kyiv.

Analysts suggest that Putin's ceasefire announcement may be a strategic move rather than a genuine step toward peace, as Russia continues to demand recognition of its control over Crimea and other occupied Ukrainian territories. The situation remains tense, with ongoing hostilities and deep mistrust between the parties involved.

As the proposed ceasefire dates approach, the international community watches closely to see whether this gesture will lead to meaningful progress toward ending the conflict or if it will be another temporary pause in a protracted war.
